Academic skills appointments
We offer individual support to taught students on a wide range of topics including academic writing, finding information and critical thinking. Our experienced learning advisors can help you to develop your academic skills and strategies.
To find out more, watch this video where you will hear students talking about the ways they have benefitted from attending a one-to-one appointment with us.

View and book available appointments
We offer appointments from Monday to Friday, 09:00 – 17:00 (9.00am – 5.00pm). New appointments are released 2 weeks in advance on every weekday. If there are no appointments available when you look, please check back regularly.
Our one-to-one appointments last up to 45 minutes and are either delivered in person at the Laidlaw Library or online through Microsoft Teams. You can choose your preference when booking an appointment. You may see a Learning Advisor up to six times per academic year. This limit allows us to distribute the support we offer fairly across the taught student population.
Before your appointment, you might want to email us with:
- a draft or a piece of work you have completed
- feedback from your tutor
- your assessment brief
What we can do for you
In advance of the meeting, we will read through your sample and in the meeting we can work with you, commenting on sections of your work and making recommendations for change. We might also share some useful resources with you.
We might signpost you to other appropriate services, such as the Careers Centre, or suggest you return for a follow-up appointment with a learning advisor.
You can also access the study space and resources in the Language Zone to help you learn a language, including English. This is particularly helpful if you are new to studying in the UK or if English is not your first language.
What we cannot do for you
We are unable to:
- advise on the content of your work as we are not subject specialists
- proofread your work as we are committed to the University's Proofreading Policy and therefore do not provide a proofreading service
- re-write sections of your assignment for you
- offer a quick fix for a deadline that is approaching
- provide advice for any Online Time Limited Assessment (OTLA) or short duration coursework you are currently working on.
Joining your online appointment
To access your appointment, we recommend using Google Chrome to log into your University of Leeds MS Office 365 account. You can join the appointment by either clicking on the “Join” button from your Outlook calendar or your Teams calendar. It may ask if you would like to install the MS Teams app, but this is not essential as the web browser version should be fine.
