Help in person for taught students
Writing Space
Open Every Weekday 1-4pm in Laidlaw Library Skills Space (ground floor) during teaching weeks.
Would you like quick help and support with your academic writing or assignments? Do you want to speak to a trained mentor about how to develop your academic skills? Do you sometimes feel isolated or unmotivated with assignments?
If so, the writing space is perfect for you! The Writing Space is a welcoming and empowering space for you to enhance your writing and academic skills. You can ‘drop-in’ any time we’re open and speak to trained academic writing mentors who can offer quick and friendly advice, or you can simply use the space as a quiet and supportive environment to work.
What help is available?
Our writing mentors are all current University of Leeds students who are trained to support students with all elements of academic writing.
They can provide guidance on:
- Finding and evaluating sources
- Reading and taking effective notes
- Structuring and planning assignments
- Critical thinking and argumentation
- Referencing
- Time management
- Dissertations planning & writing
What isn’t covered by the Writing Space?
Academic writing mentors cannot advise on the content of your work, as they’re not subject specialists but, much like our learning advisors, they can guide you to further subject-specific support, should you need it.
The Writing Space is committed to the University's Proofreading Policy and therefore does not provide a proofreading service. Academic writing mentors cannot proofread or re-write parts of your work, nor can they tell you how to change your work. Instead, the mentors will work with you collaboratively to develop your skills and understanding.
